Peter Ivers singing “In Heaven everything is fine” @Sunset 1984, L.A.

Filed under: personal history, Hollywood underground – buddyhelm @ 10:27 pm Edit This

Here’s a video from my dusty video vaults

I played drums and shot video and made art with Peter Ivers back in the seventies and early 80’s The L.A. underground music was cool then. Lots of experimental jazz and rock pushing the envelope- reinventing itself. “X” was really fresh, “Fear” was hilariously vicious, “Suburban Lawns” were the perfect art band, “The Go Go’s” were just learning chords, “The Germs” were supremely punk, “Black Flag’ was classic, and a million other bands that flashed for a moment in their underground glory. I played with “Diana Harris and the Tufftones” and “The Resistors”. Playing with punk, art bands was my reaction to arena rock dinosaur bands that I had grown tired of.

Peter was the host of “New Wave Theater” a local TV music show.
Peter was a genius at getting budgets. We cut soundtracks for Ron Howard(Grand Theft Auto), FilmEx, art film for Linda Benglis called “The Amazing Bow Wow” which can be seen in the Whitney Museum of Art. His band had various names; Ivers Divers and Vitamin Pink. He opened for the “New York Dolls” at the Palladium and freaked everyone right out of their glam fashion sense by performing in a diaper. Peter met David Lynch and introduced him to the right people. David Lynch’s first movie was “EraserHead”. If you haven’t seen it- Maybe you shouldn’t. It was a very disturbing movie- but brilliant. Peter wrote “In Heaven, everything is fine”: the showcase song in the movie.

Eraserhead-”In Heaven everything is fine” there is a Youtube segment

Peter was like a brilliant instigator. He employed talented people and made great projects, and his sense of humor always prevailed.
Josh Frank has written a book about Peter Ivers, published by Simon & Schuster. “In Heaven Everything is Fine- the unsolved life of Peter Ivers”.

Way back in 1984 I invited Peter to be a guest host at the video night club I was partners in down on Sunset Strip. The club was called “At Sunset”. It was a private after-hours late-night club right next to the Whiskey Ago-go. Lenny Bruce had done stand-up in this club back in the sixties. The Whiskey was closed down at that time, the strip was dead. I shot video every weekend and got some amazing footage of celebs, stars, and all kind of interesting people. It predated MTV by several years. It was the first video night club.

Peter was murdered in his downtown L.A. loft in 1983-An solved mystery. We had the wake for him at our club. The end of this video clip shows his last bit of writing. He was killed just a few days after that was video taped in the kitchen in At Sunset. www.peterivers.com

Gaea review plus part 3 of Spirit drumming workshop

Filed under: Uncategorized – buddyhelm @ 4:04 am Edit This
………………

Thank-you for the very nice review at Witchvox

http://www.witchvox.com/va/dt_va.html?a=usks&c=festivals&id=12634

“Spiritual Drumming, taught by special guest Russell Buddy Helm, was held in the pavilion from 2:45-5:00 pm. The description in the pamphlet stated: “Buddy’s workshops make the healing qualities of the drum accessible to all people, regardless of their musical backgrounds. Even if you’ve never touched a drum before, this workshop will help you learn the basic techniques and grooves you need. If you are an experienced percussionist, this workshop will give you new tools and insights to help you gain deeper meaning from your art.”

T….. came with me for this one (and he carried my drum! Wasn’t that sweet!) The experience was amazing!

“We started off with some rhythmic drumming. It was a beat I could follow. Buddy would speak to the beats of the drums. There was almost a hypnotic quality to this experience. He began by calling the corners. We all did. We chanted the corners in time with the beats. It was difficult for me at first, because I had never really drummed before, to speak and keep the rhythm at the same time. Buddy must have been used to this because he said that it was okay and the goal is to keep the downbeat.

Buddy used affirmations and self-enrichment chants. Power words. The energies were the most positive and powerful that I have experienced in a long time. All from drumming and chanting.

We “learned” various rhythmic beats. A couple of them I had a lot of difficulty with. There was one that was the same beat but he switched hands while doing it. I found this one tricky but I was finally able to master it.

Then, he mentioned that he liked to put people on the spot. Yeah. I was one of the one’s he chose. Yeah. I’ve never really played a drum before and yeah, I did a solo. No idea what it sounded like.. But I did it. LOL all by myself. I certainly am not a “natural” but T….. said I didn’t embarrass him, so I thought that was sweet! *grin*”

Burning tree
Filed under: Uncategorized – buddyhelm @ 8:20 pm Edit This

I received an interesting email:

Hi Buddy,

The reason I write now is because of a book “the lost ark of the covenant ” written by a Professor Tudor Parfit..he also had a show on the Learning Channel about this book and research… he believes that the ark of the covenant was really a drum and by beating the drum it gave the people communication with God and power… it made me think of you.

Although your mission seems to steer clear of the spiritual and metaphysical, favoring the mechanical approach to drumming you certainly are in awareness of the spiritual value of the drum …..

I remember a story you told me about drumming with a group of nuns in Michigan and the tree that started to burn yet was not consumed just like the “burning bush”… if you have the time can you email me the entire story I found that most uplifting and it will encourage me to drum again… thanks

The Dominican Nuns invited me to come out and drum for a Thursday Morning Prayer group art their international Mother House convent.
They had seen what I do and allowed me to bring in the four corners blessing(Indian). They wanted to pray for peace in Iraq and passed the microphone around the 200 Nuns. There was also a video feed out to the over 1,000 cloistered nuns. When we finished drumming and praying the mother superior came in and informed me calmly;
“We have been here for over 150 years. We have a favorite tree out in front of the Mother House. It’s old and it’s split up the side, but it’s still alive. It’s been here since the beginning of this convent and we love it. It has just burst into flames as you all have been drumming. The grounds keepers are calling it spontaneous combustion…that happens…” she stated calmly.
The nuns standing around me did not react. They just acknowledged the occurance in a matter-of-fact way.

The oldest Nun- in her 80’s said grufly, “When are we going to do this again?”

They then took me on a tour of the grounds and I got to understand the profound heroic work done by the Dominican order. At the end of the tour I asked, “I’m sorry, Sister, but I am a man of…shall we say, pragmatic faith. Is it possible for me to see the tree?” No one had gone out to see it.
They drove me around to the far side of the convent in front of the old beautiful brick Mother House. The city fire department was just pulling away after putting a yellow ribbon around the tree.
It was a very tall red oak, over two stories tall. It was enveloped in fragrant white smoke pouring out of the slit up the side. The mother superior said it was split but was still alive. The local newspaper photographer was there, he knew who I was. He was taking pictures, He had picked up the fire report on his radio.
He said,”
“There were flames coming off the top while you were drumming. It was incredible.”
I noticed that the leaves had not been consumed. The tree was a giant fragrant, white cloud of smoke with green leaves.
“The leaves aren’t burned.” I said.
He nodded.
“Yeah. Pretty Wierd huh? Get in there, let’s get some pictures with your drum.”
I kneeled in front of the tree and he shot a bunch of pics.

That morning I had asked God for a sign, I was tired and I had my doubts about what I was doing.
“Look, ” I said, “I am thick headed, a little dumb, stubborn and hard of hearing. So if you want me to continue with this drumming thing, you’re gonna have to make it real obvious. Otherwise, I’m gonna miss it.”

“Drum Circle of Strife” at Gaea, Kansas/ Buddy Helm Spirit Drum workshop

Filed under: Uncategorized – buddyhelm @ 9:48 pm

I had a great time Memorial day weekend at Camp Gaea in Kansas. I had a great spiritual drumming workshop on Saturday afternoon that is a great DVD. I also found some new friends as well as getting reacquainted with friends from the last time I was an honored guest of the Heartland Spiritual Alliance a few years ago. Excellent food at the personal campsite of these cool folks-thanks to Joyce, Jena, John, Julian, Patrick, Salome, and the rest of these fine folks.

Of course the drumming had its problems- Drumming rednecks- need I say more. Here is a tune that Julian, John and the others put together to articulate this continuing problem with the dysfunctional drummers. If we can laugh about it, maybe we can solve the problem.. In the meantime, don’t let the jerks suffering from Cranial Rectalism, ruin your firedance when they play aggressive, pseudo-African bully banging. Try some good old Rhythm and Blues grooves(the first world beat). They are much more joyous and dancable than machine gun banging.

Women! Take your rightful place and show the djembe Kawboys how to keep a steady, nurturing groove that is the right tempo for ecstatic safe, sacred dance.

Clik pic 4 flic

So I’ll have to post my own videos after Julian and the Camp Gaea ensemble. Its hard to follow such a great act like “Drum Circle of Strife”. But the spiritual drum workshop went really well, so here is a segment:

The groups were about three to four dozen for my workshops. Lots of healing drums, that didn’t quite get recorded. But this Saturday group was great. This is pretty good so if you want a full length 2 hour DVD. Let me know. buddy@buddyhelm.com.

Buddy Helm interviews David Lee Roth at “At Sunset” 1983
Filed under: Uncategorized – buddyhelm @ 10:38 pm Edit This

Here is a historical piece:

I helped invent MTV back in the dark ages of video. I got a job doing free lance video in an after hours night club on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, CA back in the early eighties. It was called “At Sunset”. It was right next to the Whiskey Ago-go which was shut down during those years. All kinds of cool people both famous and unknown came in through the back door and I ended up interviewing them because no one else could do it for various reasons…. I cut the segments into half hour shows and aired them in the club. This was before cable took off. Lots of people saw them and gee, I guess they got the idea to make a rock n roll party network. I’ll post the vids next, just to let you know where the real deal originated. It was fun. Too bad I don’t own the rights to the idea….I got a million of ‘em.

Boulevard Music, in Culver City, California is a great venue for traditional folk music of the highest quality. On Sunday night they still offer an open mic for singer songwriters. This opportunity is getting more rare as the financial pressure of keeping a music venue open increases. So support your local folkies! It is the last refuge for real human art.

Taken in Key West, the group was called, “The Christian Ghandi Syndrome”

We played at the “Great Escape Lounge” at the Key West airport. The airport shut down at sunset, the bar was run by a West German national and his Miami Beach wife, it was a strange mix of soldiers-of -fortune, hippies, bikini tanned beauties, mystery men and women and locals who did not hang around downtown on Duval St. We were way out at the edge of Key West and it was very, very, very, cool. I remember one night there were soldiers in kilts on R n R from Belfast. One of them kept raising his kilt up.. While out on the darkened runway a piper cub landed without running lights and transacted bizness with a 65 Chevy station wagon also without lights in the middle of the landing strip. They both left with no lights as we played, “By the time we got to Woodstock….”
Ken Dixon(far left)sent the pic, he became a Media wizard. Charlie Dechant, (The long blond haired guy) went on to Hall and Oates saxophone fame. I named the group after Christian Ghandi, the most incredible jazz keyboardist I have ever worked with. He’s the guy who looks like Ghandi. He was from India, lived in New York. We met in Florida and formed Bethlehem Asylum. David Tasse and Christian bugged out to Wisconsin. The lady singer? sorry. Buddy Helm, Roger Cruz sang in Miami. Help me out here, you guys…

Filed under: Uncategorized – buddyhelm @ 4:36 pm Edit This

Quote from website i found with Caleb the webmaster’s google search on my name:

link to Neptune Research music
“I like this music, but I don’t play it much. It isn’t even one of the sides I pull out to show what a nutball Tim Buckley was. I use Starsailor for that, or parts of Greetings From L.A. or that live one from 1970s radio called Honeyman. Buddy Helm plays drums on Honeyman, which is another good reason to listen to it. ”

OK enough old skool. Here is some sound from last week with Mr.Casual- Charlie Dechant.
I was lucky enough to get together with Charlie Dechant when I was on the road passing through Orlando. He was in between gigs with Hall and Oates so we took the opportunity to improvise a little, which is always a great treat!

Here is a very nice review of the Paralounge event in Northern Florida last month from MitzvahMom.com.

“The first day of the festival began with an early morning yoga session near the still warm bonfire. By 10 AM a large group gathered to participate in a drum session given by exquisitely intuitive drum facilitator Buddy Helm. His website talks alot about the theraputic aspects of drumming. At a time when bookshelves are full of a limitless variety of cheesy, self-help programs, I’m automatically skeptical of all claims. But with Helm’s, I was pulled emotionally into the circle as he riffed, evoking melodies from the Sound of Music soundtrack and connecting them with the music of Jim Morrison and the Rolling Stones. That’s just interesting. I’ve reserved a cabin for the May 2-4 Paralounge Drum Festival. I’m looking forward to engaging more fully with Helm’s drum circle.”

Here it is another Christmas party again. Musicians remember their lives based on their holiday gigs. This one was special. Diana Wong is a great painter. Her studio is wonderful. We met some really cool people; a Tibetan Yogi, a Chinese Tai Chi master teacher, a tremendous operatic singer, and great upright bassist, and various artistic and creative types. Diana converted her painting studio into a fun venue for the party by throwing canvas over her paint pots and dishing up some masterpiece cuisine for dinner. We jammed, Shannon Terry, Dominic Dean Breaux and me. There are a few segments. So I will post them as i get to them. Have a happy season.

Open Door Trio in Malibu, California Labor 2007

This is the second annual concert of the Open Door Trio with Shannon Terry on Mbira, Domonic Dean Breaux on Horns and Buddy Helm on Drums. This was a super human effort on my part. I drove back across the United States from Live Oak, Florida in four days( 92 hours) to do this gig. I arrived in Santa Monica at 9:30 in the AM. took a nap and drove up Pacific Coast Highway to the Ventura county line where there is great surfing. This group of people are very protective of this special environment and this annual party celebrates their success at keeping the Oil and Condo gangsters at bay one more year. Paralounge drum worshop with Buddy Helm part 3
Filed under: Uncategorized – buddyhelm @ 8:39 pm Edit This

The paralounge is a great place to get into the subtleties of what the groove does to our souls and our bodies. I know it is tempting to bang on a drum in order to impress the other guys around the fire, but what could be better than to get a groove going that the women can dance to! That is a true blessing. So we develop the steady, laid- back tempos and patterns that we can all dance to. This makes a sense of community which leads to deep trance. The paralounge drum grooves are some of the best sustained, non competitive, danceable drum firedances that I’ve witnessed around the country. And the people get along! There is no aggression. What a treat!

It’s that time of year again! Drumming with Buddy Helm at the 22nd annual open house at Seasons on Montana Avenue was a rousing success! Lots of familiar faces and lots of new faces; drumming, smiling, sharing the groove and Seasons’ good cheer. Even the Governor and his wife strolled by and shared in the fun. Here is a video excerpt of the drum dance party after the 2 hour drumming workshop. I am banging on the djun djuns(bass drums) and operating the camera, about 60 feet below the ground under a Kansas pasture south of Topeka. Here is a snip from the video we shot in the beautiful Octagon chapel at the United Universalist Church in Clearwater, Florida. This piece was about halfway through the 2 hour event where individuals could lay down in the middle of the “Circle of Souls” while we drummed away their illness, fear, doubt and clear Karma with our loving and focused intentional drumming. This event is available as a DVD. The sound is good! Call us at 1-888-5405 or email: buddy@buddyhelm.com

Bethlehem Asylum at Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa 2004
Filed under: Uncategorized, personal history, Bethlehem Asylum, Live music Videos – buddyhelm @ 10:54 pm Edit This

Here is a clip from the survivors of Bethlehem Asylum reunion April 2004 in Tampa, Florida at Skipper’s Smokehouse. I just put up a video camera and got sound from the PA system speakers. So forgive the technician, please.

But this is a hint of things to come. We performed another reunion concert in St. Petersburg, Florida April 2006 and that is now a DVD with good sound.

In case you were not born yet, Bethlehem Asylum was a psychedelic Jazz, folk rock ensemble in the Southeast in 1969 til 1972. We had some great players in the band. Charlie Dechant went on to be the sax player with Hall and Oates, Danny Finley went on to be Panama Red and play with Kinky Friedman, Buddy Helm went out to LA and worked with Tim Buckley, Zappa and a bunch of cool people. Christian Ghandi was a fantastic keyboard player(he’s gone) and Jim Neiman was a great bass player and singer(he is also gone) but they are not forgotten. We did two albums with Exit-Capricorn records, a compilation CD is available at CD baby.

Drumming at the Los Angeles Zoo
Filed under: Uncategorized, Drumming movies, Live music Videos – buddyhelm @ 2:39 am Edit This

Here was a fun gig. An international drumming group. Shawn(in white) and his wife are from Durbin, South Africa. He read my first book in Edinborough, Scotland and had to come over to study drums with me. They stayed for three years. Francis, on the far right, is a martial arts teacher from Paris(also a great guitar player) Cathy (to my left) is from LA.

I don’t know where the gorilla is from, but he could really dance.

If you are interested in knowing where I will be performing and holding drumming workshops, look up above and pull down the pages and links tab.

I am also putting up current drum lesson/workshop videos on the drum workshop page.

I have just finished reformatting the first book I wrote on drumming:

“Drummng the Spirit to Life” This will be available soon. There is also a spoken word version of the book with drumming. It is awesome.
In the meantime, the Martial Arts drumming CD is doing very well. Master Guro Dan Inosanto is traveling the world and teaching advanced martial arts, using this drumming CD that we recorded for his classes. These CDs are available, check the martial arts drumming page. email me at: buddy@buddyhelm.com

Shannon Terry’s Open Door Orchestra
Filed under: Uncategorized, Live music Videos – buddyhelm @ 9:23 pm Edit This

One of the great priviledges in being a drummer is that I get calls from interesting composers to perform.

Shannon Terry is one of the most unique performers I have ever worked with, and Dominic Lepo(sp?) is a great flutist, saxaphonist and all round cool guy. These two gentlemen have been developing “The Open Door orchestra” for a few years in LA. This event was taped on Labor Day, 2006, north of Malibu, on a rustic piece of authentic California countryside. We had a wonderful time performing. This is just a bit of what we did. The rest is history, as they say. Recordings available. Check this clip out on YouTube.com

Drumming for a Wedding in Laguna Hills, California
wedding drums Drumming has always been part of the community experience. In the villages, people would complete their daily chores; feeding childredn, fixing the roof on the huts, grinding grain, mliking goats and cows, fixing food, repairing hunting tools. The accompanying drumming was played by members of the community, not classically trained musicians. They played beats that would work for that moment. Eventually these simple rhythms became what was expected and anticipated for each and every event in the village life. Usage came from experimenting with what was appropriate, creating a sense of continuity and safety. It is the reason we listen to music while we work at our jobs today. This type of drumming needs to be compatible with the needs of the community. Aggressive egostistical drumming doesn’t really work in this context.

I was in various towns over the last few years and sometimes the local businesses and population complained that the town square drumming group was irritating. They called it “Dysfunctional drumming” That is what I have come to address in many of my workshops around the country. This dysfunctional drumming is a result of emotional trauma, fear, anger, and other emotional conditions that the drum can help. If we let it.

Shy Drummers
Filed under: Uncategorized, personal history – buddyhelm @ 5:39 am Edit This

Lots of people are shy about their drumming. They like to hide in the sound of the group, and not really be heard. That is fine. The sound generated never dies. I was a shy kid, but encouraged to be a good drummer. Kilts were wierd for playing drums and marching in. But you could hear the Wavettes Drum and Baton Corps coming from miles away. The Wavettes Junior and Senior Corp took top national honors. Picture was taken in Elkhart, Indiana

After marching around in the heat, wearing a kilt, nothing can embarass you anymore- its pointless to be shy in a situation like this

North American Djembe Technique
Filed under: Uncategorized, Drum lessons – buddyhelm @ 3:48 pm Edit This

With all due respect to Traditional African Drumming, we in North America are developing a style of Djembe drumming that fits with our culture. Instead of the extreme power and technique that the great master drum teachers from Senegal, Mali, Ghana, Guinea and other African nations bring to our shores, we are using a simplified approach with great results.

I have witnessed this evolution over the last twenty years of my touring and teaching handdrumming. Firstly, we have eliminated the three note distinction that all African drummers emphasize; most folks hit a deep note in the middle of the drumhead and a high note out at the edge somewhere. This seems to get the job done pretty well for most people and they don’t get overwhelmed with the fear of “Not doing it right”. They get to the groove, which is what most people want to do.

The groove again is an American invention-of sorts. The Traditional African teaches parts that are played in prearranged patterns, that fit together like clockwork. The final experience is awesome but the players seldom get to experience the flow of improvisation which is the hallmark of American music. In African drumming, the only soloist is the master and a few of their cohorts, everyone else must do the dishes(play the parts). This leaves most people with a feeling of only partial participation. The rigidity of the form does not lend itself to North American taste in music where we must noodle. That noodling is part of the American experience. It is the basis for Rock, Jazz, Folk, Country, Blues and even Gospel. We feel the Spirit and we must express it immediately. This is different than obeying a rigid teacher who is locked into their own historical approach to a musical instrument that everyone can play differently.

The challenge is to play together in this form of drumming that borders on anarchy.

The solution is to address the downbeat, which is another American creation. The downbeat came out of the Jazz traditions. It is the beginning note of any phrase, the anchor note. If we use the deep note in the middle of the drum as a downbeat, then noodle at the edge, then repeat the downbeat in a steady manner, we create a groove that we are familiar with in the U.S. It is commonly called Rock ‘n Roll. And it is really the first World Beat.

I know that these ideas fly in the face of conventional drum training. I have been classically trained as a musician myself and I have had to “unlearn” a great deal to appreciate the simple beauty of what our culture of mixed people and styles has to offer the world of drumming here in the good old USofA.

If you would like me to come and teach your group let me know. buddy@buddyhelm.com

Drumming in Paradise

Buddy Helm in the Florida Keys

I have been blessed by the drumming meditation process. I get to travel to exotic locals and drum with interesting people. Here, I am in Islamorada in the Florida Keys. This picture is from the first DVD about this unique form of drumming. The DVD is called Women’s Day Drumming with Buddy Helm. If you want a DVD, email me at buddy@buddyhelm.com

Drumming and Laughing
Filed under: Uncategorized, Healing drums, Drum Group Etiquette – buddyhelm @ 6:30 pm Edit This
Drumming and laughing go together. If there is fear in the drumming group, don’t take it personally. Check out the drum leader, he may be playing from fear and anxiety himself-probably because he was traumatized by his teachers to play “Harder! Faster! Louder!” MOST people like to play at a moderate tempo and volume. Don’t let the Djembe Cowboys hijack your groove.

Hi Buddy !

I’m remembering the first time I attended one of your drumming workshop in Florida, about a year ago. Before the workshop, you could have never convinced me that drumming could have any influence over my health or my belief sytem… but it did.

I had forgotten that I am a rhythmic woman. The deep bass note opened my heart and I have been having the sweetest journey since that first drumming day. I am well, I am peaceful, I am creative, and I know nothing under heaven can stop the progress of my soul on this journey.

Through your teachings I am remembering so many things… like, that love begins with my ability to look at myself in the mirror with love; this love has continued to grow and now I can look at another with love. That growth has lead me to your HelmTone Drum Therapy. I am studying with you so that I can heal myself and help others to heal and unravel the false beliefs that hold us down, keep us prisoner, steal our energy and leave us weak and vulnerable.

Besides that, I’m having the time of my life drumming with friends and finding new places to share the groove.

Buddy you are the drumming mystic and philosopher! Thank you so much.

Thus far -
- Cyndy
