There are things to take into consideration before unleashing the power of the drum. Firstly; is the space safe? The drum will give the feeling that the space is safe, but make sure that it is. Also, that there is a visual for the participant(s) to trance on without fixating on a negative image. A window is good that shows trees and a blue sky. Getting pulled by someone else’s rhythm

We are so sensitive to other people’s rhythms that often times we are “pulled” into their vortex of dysfunctional energy just by the sheer weight of their dominating rhythm. Their dysfunctional groove takes us over. This can be detrimental to our own sense of well-being and we don’t even realize where the anxiety is coming from. Described as a knot of tension in the stomach many of us have experienced this sense of dislocation from our own sense of self. It can be remedied by remembering our own downbeat. Feeling our own groove will bring us back to relaxation……

No ‘ear’ for rhythm?

Hello Buddy,

“Do you think that rhythm can be taught to someone with virtually no ‘ear’ for it? I come from a musical family so I just got lucky that way, and can help if that’s what it takes, but while i can teach salsa steps all day, I don’t know how to teach such a basic idea as ‘listen and move to the beat’.

There’s no hurry on this, but I have immense respect for you as a gentle and effective teacher, and I know you have run into this sort of thing. How much potential for improvement is there in someone with no natural ear, and how, if at all, can I help him?

The distractions that interfere with a person trying to feel their own sense of rhythm are a result of trauma – usually. The steady gentle slow downbeat in the middle of the drumhead is the safest way for them to recalibrate their sense of rhythm that has been dislocated. Set up two drums, hit just the low middle downbeat tone at a medium tempo, with a soft high note at the edge, repeat steady for fifteen minutes or more slow it down until your friend starts to FEEL the concept of a steady pulse. This is something I deal with a lot. There is psychological processing that accompanies this miraculous event. Be gentle and non judgemental. Let me know. I have CDs.

I saw the heartbreaking news about the death and destruction in the Gulf of Mexico. So our new drumming group in Nagoya, Japan started by Chisato Mishima and Steven Bellamy have created a wonderful drum prayer for my home waters.

I am having an incredibly wonderful time in Nagoya, Japan. We have been drumming and streaming live on Justin.tv/buddyhelm drumming, also on skype, and we also were picked up by Japanese National TV. I have drummed with the sweetest people. Dr. STeven BEllamy and his wife Chisato are consumate hosts and have arranged an astounding array of places for me to drum with people here. We are focusing on the healing and the mediation drumming. I brought two of my special Djembes from Ghana and we are accumulating drums here. This will be a recuring tour every few months and I love it.

We are sharing the groove in a very healing, spiritual way and are not hindered by language or culture. The groove carries our love around the whole universe!

I had a wonderful Sunday on the Gulf in St. Pete marrying Ralph and Linda, a sweet couple. They wrote their own ceremony ( I added a few things as the minister) then we drummed and the dolphins CAME around the boat! They stayed for a long time, I even heard them singing as we gently drummed. This was a major event for all of us. Thank-you for asking me to be the drumming minister at your wedding Ralph and Linda!

The concept of Rhythmic Dysfunction has been conceived in the recent years by the Helmtone practioners because there was no other vocabulary to describe what people were approaching me to help them with. They are sincere, intelligent, talented people with a common occurence: they are disassociated from their sense of rhythm.

When people approach a music teacher, the assumption by the teacher is that they want to learn to play music, but many times the people want to be healed by the qualities inherent in music. This is not becoming a musician, although they will no doubt become good musicians after they are healed. The music teacher must then treat the person with a different form of respect. There are no wrong notes in this process. There are clues. The Rhythmic Indicators that appear in the person are clues to the real reason that they are the way they are. Then the healing phenomenon of the groove can do its miraculous work resulting in a happy, healthy, integrated person- who can also drum very well.
