Drum Lessons Djembe Reggae
LET’S PLAY DJEMBE REGGAE!
The trick to remember in playing Reggae Djembe is to NOT play the downbeat. Bob Marley was great at making the groove happen with his rhythm guitar; playing a chanka chanka pattern. This was steady while the drummer went off on fills at the end of each phrase. The drummer avoided the downbeat at the end of his fills just to make it interesting, and to fool the dancers. Sly and Robbie are the greatest Bass and Drum section in the history of reggae. When they play, its like jazz with a funky twist that messes with your head and your body. Check out “Yellow man” for some funk in the reggae groove.

Tripolets
Here is a sample of a djembe pattern in a tripolet beat rhythm. This is a basic rhythm structure and common in most cultures. It is often used for deep trance and powerful ceremonial drumming. This notation is a simplification that is more understandable in our culture.
Your hands just go back and forth but the accent falls on alternating hands. Say the word: TRIP O LET as you hit the notes.
