old photo with Christian in Miami 1969

Christian played keyboards in Bethlehem Asylum. This was taken by Ron Sill at a sound check where we played with Jethro Tull at The Miami Sports Arena. Christian was born in Jaipur, India and moved to New York City when he was fourteen years old and played jazz with many of the great musicians of his era. He was without a doubt the greatest jazz keyboardist I have ever played with. He also was a formidable trombone player, jazz flutist and all around musical genius. He taught me so much I will always be grateful to his memory. He was also a Brahmin, born into the religious caste of India. His name was Christian Ghandi and he looked much like Ghandi and his spiritual teachings were as important if not more important than his musical instruction. I was extremely fortunate in having a teacher, musical partner, guru like Robert Christian Gandhi Pac.

Seasons in Santa Monica 23rd annual drum open house

Cathy Javier has maintained Seasons gift store for 25 years. The drumming has been going for 23 years. We drum on the sidewalk three times a year. Last night was the holiday open house and as usual it draws a big crowd, kids, baby strollers, teens, grown ups, all kinds of folks, Lots of people who have never hit a drum before sit in and get the drum bug. Lots of kids drum for the first time and gain confidence immediately. The police on horseback came by to get the horses used to the drumming. Thanks to Kali and Gary Woodings for my fine new hat!

saving one whale at a time

had to share this . . .

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs319.ash2/59955_432485606709_663016709_5582286_4041297_n.jpg
…The Whale… If you read a recent front page story of the San Francisco Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.
A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands
(outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined
that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and
untangle her.
They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around as she was thanking them.
Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.
May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you.
And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude.
I pass this on to you, my friends, in the same spirit.
