I wrote “Drumming the Spirit to Life” originally titled, “Let the Goddess Dance” as a decision to make the kind of world that I wanted to live in, i.e. where women are safe to dance.
I had enough of trying to write end-of-the-world sci fi flicks and movies that had nothing but explosions, so later, playing in a band down in Venice, CA one weekend, I realized that the world we had created was not safe for women to dance. As soon as they felt the groove, they were in trouble, getting harassed by guys. All they wanted to do was dance. To me that was a sacred event. Men benefit if they can protect this feminine energy.
I wrote the book because the drumming was dysfunctional at Venice beach. I knew that we would have to evolve a style of drumming that was sacred, swinging, unique to our culture and dancable, and capable of renewing itself like rock ‘n roll was always capable of doing. This was going to be the beginning of a long groove that would change the face of our culture. That was in 1997.
I am glad to say that the world I had wanted has come to exist(partly). The women are safe to dance the ecstatic dance of trance and sacred joy that has been missing in our culture(in some places). Now we must go to the next level and create the sacred rhythms that are necessary for our culture to particpate in the ancient ritual of drumming for the sacred dance. Join this groove and feel life.
This book was published by Llewellyn Worldwide, and received great interest around the world. It is still available in some places. You can get a used original copy on Amazon. I can replace the CD if you do get one of those.
