2006. Captain Dan was an old hand at cruising for dolphins; he had been taking out tourists for decades in his gorgeous 52 foot yachts at Dolphin Landings on St. Pete Beach. The dolphins always came. We met at a party, I mentioned that I wanted to do a dolphin drumming cruise. He called about a month later, “Let’s do this.”
It was a natural fit. Captain Dan was into yoga, meditation, health food, healthy life style. He is also an excellent sea captain who really knows the local waters around St. Petersburg.
When we went out the first time, the sun was starting to set, the dolphins heard the laid back grooves and came in closer to check us out. The more we laid back the grooves, the closer they came to the boat.
They liked it, but it had to be very slow and gentle, sensual.
The full moon was high overhead as we headed back to the dock, dolphins still with us. We slid into our birth at the dock and everyone sighed, wide eyed with amazement. The dolphins had given us something in return for drumming for them. It was an energy. It was some kind of love. We could feel it. We got to the point where I was flying down every full moon and doing a cruise. It was the most wonderful thing I could ever remember doing. I never wanted the moonlight grooves on the gulf to end.
